Frozen pipes

Never ever switch your heater off when you leave home, at least not when there’s a cold wave — that’s the lesson we learnt this week.

Our fellow Singlish-sprouting mate BB arrived home on Tuesday to a chilling surprise. His pipes froze while he was at work. Guess we’re all so accustomed to switching off everything before we leave the house that we forget that rule is not so practical in extreme temperatures!

That happened to be one of the coldest days ever, and it was not funny at all to be stuck in a heatless home. BB had to endure more than an hour’s wait, as well as some embarassment, for the maintenance guys to come heat up his pipes again.

The moral of the story? When you head out, leave your heater on at the auto mode and set the temperature to 65 degrees F.
